Nataša Tovirac (1971, Ljubljana), a visible figure on the Slovenian contemporary dance scene, works as a freelancer in the area of contemporary dance, choreography and dance pedagogy. Since 1992, she has been running Intakt Dance Studio, which brings together contemporary dancers and makers and offers different training programmes. Her pedagogical and choreographic work at the Studio involves working with children, the young and adults. Nataša has been teaching at the contemporary dance programme of the Pre-School Education, Grammar and Art Grammar School since 2002 and has been a dance mentor to people with special needs at the Barka Association, where she has been teaching movement and giving workshops for over 17 years.
Nataša studied at the Vlaamse Dansacademie in Brugges, Belgium, and graduated from the Academy of Dance in Ljubljana. Supported by grants of different European cultural institutions, she attended a variety of workshops at home and abroad led by choreographers and artists such as Meg Stuart, Mark Tompkins, Nigel Charnock, Jordi Cortes Molina, Pavel Štorek, Marina Van Hoecke, Joe Alegado, Zlatko Kaučič, all of whom have significantly influenced her aesthetics and way of working.
She has created thirteen evening-length dance works, in which she has developed a distinct poetics of blending authentic movement and improvisation against the background of various themes. Between 2012 and 2015 she was a dance selector at the Public Fund for Cultural Activities of the Republic of Slovenia for two Slovenian amateur dance festivals: Pika Miga and Živa. In 2011 she received the Meta Vidmar Plaque for achievements in dance, granted by the Public Fund for Cultural Activities, and in 2015, as part of the teaching collective of the contemporary dance programme of the Pre-school Education, Grammar and Art Grammar School, the Ksenija Hribar Award for outstanding pedagogical work. She is a certified Kundalini Yoga and Shakti Dance instructor and Tui-na massage practitioner.
