dancer, performer, choreographer, pedagogue
Julija Pečnikar (1995, Ljubljana) is a dancer, performer and choreographer who graduated from the Budapest Contemporary Dance Academy (BCDA) in 2019. She gained her first experience of movement while learning judo techniques. She later learnt about contemporary dance at SVŠGUGL, an art grammar school in Ljubljana. As a dancer and performer, she has worked with various choreographers and directors such as: Varja Hrvatin, Jan Rozman, Vita Osojnik, Urška Vohar, Kelemen Patrik, Molnár Csaba, Blanca Arrieta, Ida Hørlyck, Yasen Vasilev, Marco Torrice, Adrienn Hód, Tamás Bakó, Viktror Szeri, Tijen Lawton and many others.
In recent years she has developed her own choreographic work, including the short dance intervention Jenny and, a year later, the longer dance solo Soup (Milnica), both of which were presented at the U(KREP) Festival at the Ljubljana Dance Theatre. In 2023 she prepared the full-length performance Softwareness, which was produced by the NEST Platform and performed in Ljubljana and Budapest.
She teaches movement and contemporary dance techniques in courses and workshops, including as part of the training programme Praktikum in contemporary dance art at the SVŠGUGL Art Gymnasium.
She is interested in creative movement in a broader sense, the presence and responsiveness of the body and recognising and translating movement expressions. She currently works in Ljubljana and Budapest.
