Sebastjan Starič

Sebastijan Starič (1971, Ljubljana), a free-spirited boy from the streets, was first noticed in the end of 1980s by choreographer Ksenija Hribar, the leader of the dance company that later developed into Dance Theatre Ljubljana. He joined the company and started training in dance, acting, improvisation, physical theatre etc. at home and abroad. In the beginning of 1990s Sebastjan performed in some of the most successful shows by Ana Monro Theatre: Sanremo, Variete-Impro, Rape, Strangle and Call etc. He has been a member of the physical theatre group Fourklour (established by the choreographer and dancer Branko Potočan) since its founding in 1998. He has worked as a dancer, choreographer and actor in a number of Slovenian theatre and dance performances in institutional theatres as well as in different ad hoc projects and collaborations. He is known for his collaborations with video artists Ema Kugler and Marko Kovačič.

His opus includes theatre and dance performances, produced in Slovenia and Austria. His performing style largely relies on physical theatre principles, which Starič continues to develop to arrive to the movement and the emotivity that is characteristic of his expressivity, which is best described as oscillating between melancholy and eruptive energy.

His mentoring work with children and youth began in the mid-90s. He has been teaching and giving workshops, among others, at the Public Fund for Cultural Activities of the Republic of Slovenia, CCC Klagenfurt and worked as director and choreographer with a number of Slovenian theatre and dance groups based in Carinthia, Austria. He is also one of the initiators of theatrical activity at the KUD Pozitiv Cultural Association (at Ivan Cankar Student Resident Halls, Ljubljana), which has gained reputation for its quality performances also outside the local context.

He has been practising martial arts, especially box, for over 20 years. Sebastjan Starič is also the recipient of several important local and international awards.
