Dancer, choreographer and pedagogue Milan Tomášik (1981, Slovakia) has been living and working in Slovenia since 2004. He studied dance at the J. L. Bellu Conservatory in Banska Bystrica and at the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava and in 2004 graduated from P.A.R.T.S. in Brussels. In 2001 he received the DanceWeb scholarship, granted by the ImpulsTanz Festival in Vienna. Also one of the co-founders of the acclaimed dance company Les SlovaKs, Milan has co-created three of the company’s evening-length dance performances: Opening Night, Journey Home and Fragments. Besides making his own work, he has worked with a number of renowned Slovenian choreographers such as Iztok Kovač, Maja Delak, Mala Kline, Barbara Novakovič Kolenc, Tanja Skok, Snježana Premuš, Magdalena Reiter, and many others. In his choreographic practice and movement research, he explores the different modalities of movement and ‘where it comes from’. His interest in the origins and the meaning of dance has led him to work with the ensemble for renaissance music and dance Cortesía, with which he performed between 2006 and 2010.

He created several solo performances: Within (2006), Off-beat, (2011) later documented in a short dance film Off-beat live made by Stanislav Dobák (2014), Solo 2016 (2016), Dancing Through the Summer (2022), Arms that never knew me (2024).

In 2014 he founded Milan Tomášik & Co and created three dance works: The Hunting Season (2014),  Silver Blue (2015) and Fight Bright (2018). Milan Tomášik & Co has received two awards for The Hunting Season performance for the best light design at the KioSk and Gibanica festivals, both in 2015. The core of the company consists of a long term collaborators Alessandro Sollima (IT), Špela Vodeb, Tina Valentan, Jasna Vastl (SLO) and a new member Diego Alvarez Sanóu (Costa Rica). The company has performed in a numerous countries in Europe, for instance in Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czech republic, Germany, Greece, Italy, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden.

Besides his own company, Milan works as freelance choreographer and created several commissioned works for different companies, theatres and schools in Krakow, Banská Bystrica, Amsterdam, Salzburg, Catania… His latest choreographic work Besi (Demons) for Divadlo Študio tanca premiered in Banská Bystrica, Slovakia in 2021.

An experienced dance teacher, Milan has taught contemporary dance in Slovenia and abroad in a variety of settings, from professional dance companies and academies (EnKnapGroup, Ultima Vez, Štúdio Tanca, DanceTheatre Ljubljana, The Place (London), SEAD (Salzburg), DOCH (Stockholm), Scenekunstskole (Copenhagen) to workshops for amateur dancers, organised by the Public Fund for Cultural Activities in Ljubljana and Maribor (Slovenia). He was teaching contemporary dance and composition at the Academy of Dance Alma Mater Europaea in Ljubljana since 2016. In 2023/24 he is teaching contemporary dance techniques at the Performing Arts Grammar School Ljubljana (SVŠGUGL) and dance workshops at the Nest platform in Ljubljana.
