performance artist, yoga instructor

Maja Kalafatić (1984, Celje) is a dancer, choreographer, pedagogue and yoga instructor, living and working between Ljubljana and Belgrade (Serbia). Maja started dancing in 1988 in Dance Forum Celje, where she trained for further 15 years and during this period performed in practically all Forum’s performances and events. She later graduated from the Salzburg Experimental Academy of Dance (in 2005) and from Hochschule für Musik und Tanz in Cologne, Germany (in 2015) with a BA in Dance Dissemination (tutors Nina Patricia Hänel and Martin Sonderkamp). She is currently a PhD student at Transdisciplinary Studies of Modern Arts and Media in Belgrade working under the guidance of Prof. Miško Šuvaković. From 2021, she is studying at the master’s dance program of the Finnish Theater Academy – Uniarts Helsinki.

Maja regularly collaborates with choreographers Mateja Bučar, Jovana Tomić, Esta Matković, Stephanie Felber and others. In 2015, she performed at Gibanica (Moving Cake) Biennial of Slovenian Contemporary Dance Art with a performance Betwixt, co-created with Maria De Dueñas Lopez/DG Collective.

Maja’s interests include movement, choreography, theatre and, recently, also theory. She teaches contemporary dance and yoga and organises workshops for children and adults.
