Maya Milenović Workman

Maya Milenovic Workman (1959, Maribor) works between Slovenia and the USA since 1980. After graduating from the London Contemporary Dance School, she moved to New York and earned her undergraduate (liberal arts, fosuc psychology) and graduate (media, focus fiilm) degrees at the New School University in New York. From the early 1980s she has created over 40 performances, 50 projects with children as well as written several screenplays, plays and novels. Her collaborations with musician Reggie Workman and acclaimed theatre directors Tomaž Pandur and Howard Gardner encouraged her to start working on her own projects. Maya’s activism, critical thinking and distinct expressivity has influenced and empowered the marginalised, especially children, young people and people with special needs. Between 1996 and 2013 she was developing her own creative methodology Stasis© based on an interdisciplinary approach to artistic creativity. Maya is interested in working with people who seek to find points of connection between the present day, art and tomorrow. She finds inspiration in the work of Howard Gardner (Multiple Intelligences Theory), Stanislavski (his work in relation to choreography), Merce Cunningham, surrealism etc.

In 1988 she co-founded with musician Reggie Workman the laboratory of dance, drum and drama MADLOM (Montclair Academy, New Jersey), dedicated to the creative development of students through dance, drama and drumming, spoken word, moving theatre and video.
