choreographer, dancer, performer, pedagogue
Tina Valentan (1978, Maribor) graduated from the School for New Dance Development in Amsterdam in 2007 and has been working as a freelance dancer ever since. Her solo and group works have been supported by different production houses such as Ljubljana-based institutes Federacija, Emanat, Maska and City of Women, Maribor-based Plesna izba, the European Cultural Foundation and Modul-dance.
Tina often works as a choreographer in theatre and music productions. She gained a lot of teaching experience in Plesna izba Maribor / The Maribor Dance Room, co-creating its training programmes between 2010 and 2013. She also teaches technique classes at the contemporary dance programme of the Pre-school Education, Grammar and Art Grammar School in Ljubljana. In her work she is focusing on integrating the body and the mind, an approach which in relation to time and space allows her to create material on the spot and allows the work to reveal itself. She started exploring this principle in the acclaimed solo piece When the Moon Is Increasing, expanding it later using the principles of somatic practices (Body Mind Centering in particular), which she got to know through her collaboration with choreographer and dancer Snježana Premuš. Tina is recognised by the audiences and critics alike as a performer with a distinct artistic sensibility and presence.
Tina has received several awards, most recently the 2017 Ksenija Hribar Award in the category dancer / performer presented by the Contemporary Dance Association Slovenia.
