Beno Novak

Beno Novak (Kranj, 1991) began dancing under the guidance of Saša Lončar at Qulenium Cultural Association in Kranj and later attended the contemporary dance programme at the Pre-school Education, Grammar and Art Grammar School in Ljubljana. In 2016, he graduated from the Salzburg Experimental Academy of Dance (SEAD). He was subsequently invited to upgrade his knowledge at the Tisch Dance (New York University) and at The Place (London). He is currently pursuing his master’s degree in choreography at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp.
In 2017 and 2018 he performed in Gary Clark’s Coal, which received numerous awards, among them  the UK Theatre Award and the Critics Circle National Dance Award. He has worked with international companies and choreographers such as Jason Mabana Dance, James Wilton Dance Company, Deborah Hay, Etienne Guilloteau, Alix Eynaudi, Matej Kejžar, Paul Blackman & Christine Gouzelis, Zsuzsa Rozsavolgyi, Magdalena Reiter and others. He is the author of several dance performances: Body Concert (in collaboration with Ana Romih, 2017), 400 Rabbits (in collaboration with Marina Abib, 2019), Materija (Matter) with young dancers of the Maribor Dance Room (2020) and many others. In 2023, he received the award of the expert jury for the performance To Resurrect 2.0 at the Gibanica, the biennial of Slovenian contemporary dance art and the Ksenija Hribar Award by Slovenian Contemporary Dance Association for a perspective artist in the field of contemporary dance. In 2024 he made the solo dance piece Rumble. His work is a constant exploration of personal experiences expressed through strong physicality mixed with sensitivity, fragility, strength and exhaustion.
Beno has taught, shared and developed his Zero Space method at different centres and festivals at home and abroad. He also teaches at the Performact in Portugal and the Dance Academy in Ljubljana. He is the artistic and executive director of the Dance Festival and Summer Intensive festival in Portugal and executive director of Kalejdoskop Festival (KD Qulenium) in Kranj and Ljubljana, Slovenia.
